Same-Day Care Versus Waiting Until Monday
If you are holding your jaw right now, trying to decide whether this can wait, I know that feeling. Tooth pain does not pick a convenient hour. You do not have to guess your way through it. Call, tell me what is going on, and we will figure out together whether you need a chair today or whether we can settle things until the next open day.
I own this practice. I am not cycling through a corporate book, so when something is truly urgent I look at the schedule myself and try to get you in. That is easier Monday through Wednesday, when we stay until 7:00 pm. Thursday we open later and close at 6:00 pm. Friday we close at 4:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday the office is closed. If you call after we have locked the door, leave a message with your name, number, and a short note about what happened. I would rather hear from you at 9:00 pm than have you sit on a swelling until Monday with no plan.
When you call, I am listening for a few things: swelling, fever, and whether you can eat or sleep. Swelling and fever move you up. A broken filling with no pain can often wait until a regular opening the next morning. If you are scared or not sure how to describe it, start with where it hurts and when it started. That is enough for us to help.
Same-day care here usually means an exam, an X-ray, and getting you out of pain. We will get you settled first. A full crown or a long rebuild might need a second visit. I will tell you that before we start so you are not surprised, and we will send you home as comfortable as we can.
What I Count as a Dental Emergency
Please call the same day if your face or the area under your jaw is swelling. Call if a tooth got knocked loose or all the way out. Call if the pain does not move with an over-the-counter pain reliever, or if the pain comes with a fever. Call if a crack goes into the nerve, or a broken edge is cutting your tongue or cheek. Call if you have an abscess, a pimple on the gum, or a bad taste that will not rinse away. Call if bleeding will not stop. The American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy page covers the same cracked teeth, chipped teeth, and toothaches I am talking about here.
A dull ache after you chewed something hard is not automatically an emergency. Sensitivity to cold that fades in a second usually is not either. If you are not sure, call anyway. I would rather talk you through it than have you wait in pain because you did not want to bother us.
Kids are a different call than adults on a knocked-out tooth. A baby tooth usually stays out. A permanent front tooth we try to save. If you are a parent standing in the kitchen with a scared child, say the age and whether it is a baby tooth when you call so we know which chair to set up. We will make room.
This post is the umbrella for people searching emergency dentist Thornton and trying to decide if the problem is urgent. If a filling actually fell out, read the filling guide we already published. If you think a molar is cracked, use the cracked molar guide. Use this page first when the only question is whether you need to be seen today.
What You Can Do Tonight
Keep the area clean. Rinse with warm salt water. Do not pack aspirin against the gum. It burns the tissue.
If a tooth came out whole, hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it quickly in milk or saline, then try to seat it back. If you cannot, keep it in milk and come in. Time matters on that one. If you are shaking and cannot get it seated, do not keep trying. Milk and a call is enough.
For swelling, a cold pack on the cheek, twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off. If the swelling is spreading toward the eye, or you feel short of breath or cannot swallow comfortably, that is an emergency room visit, not a dental chair. Go. We can take care of the tooth after you are safe.
If a crown or filling came off, keep the piece in a clean bag. Do not use household glue. A pharmacy often sells a small piece of dental wax. Cover a sharp edge with that until we see you. Eat on the other side. Soft food is enough for the night.
Lost Fillings, Cracked Molars, and Repair Work
A lost filling can wait a few hours if there is no pain. It should not wait weeks. The tooth dries out and can crack, and then the repair is a different conversation. If it happened at dinner and you are comfortable, sleep, then call in the morning.
A cracked molar that hurts when you bite, then lets go when you open, is one I want to see sooner. Those cracks travel. You are not being dramatic by calling on that one.
If the tooth is already broken and you need it rebuilt, that is dental repair, not a new implant consult. We handle a lot of that in the chair when we can fit you in the same day.
Where We See Emergency Patients in Thornton
The office is at 566 East 144th Avenue, Thornton, 80023. That is the north side of Thornton, close to Northglenn and Todd Creek. People drive in from Westminster, Brighton, and Erie on the same roads. Patients from Broomfield, Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, and Boulder come too when they need someone who will actually pick up.
If you have been searching emergency dentist Thornton and landing on a nameless list, this is the actual address. Park, come in. We will look. You do not need to have every detail ready.
I have practiced in this community for more than ten years. I opened my own office because I wanted a smaller room where I could sit and talk, not a hallway of chairs. You will get time. I will show you the X-ray and tell you what I see in plain language.
Questions Patients Ask Us
Is a toothache a dental emergency?
It depends on the toothache. Sharp, constant pain, pain that wakes you up, or pain with swelling: come in. A mild ache after something sweet that fades: call and we will find a regular opening. If you are lying awake at 1:00 am, that is enough of a reason to leave a message.
Can I wait until Monday?
If it is Friday after 4:00 pm and you have a lost filling with no pain, yes, with wax and a soft diet until we open. If your face is swelling, no. When in doubt, call. We will not scold you for asking.
What if it is after hours?
Call 303-228-3554 anyway. If we are closed, use the recording, and we will call back. We will tell you whether to wait, use urgent care, or go to the emergency room for spreading swelling.
Do I need the emergency room?
Go to the emergency room for spreading facial swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a fever with a very swollen face. The emergency room will not rebuild a tooth. They will keep you safe. We do the dental work after.
Will you still see me if I have been putting this off?
Yes. People wait because they are scared, busy, or hoping it will settle. Come in. We will start with getting you comfortable, then talk about the rest.
If You Need to Be Seen Today
If you already know you need emergency dental care, skip the guessing and call. Or book online. Tell the front desk it is urgent and what happened. Bring the piece of tooth or crown if you have it. Bring a list of your medicines.
I would rather see you an hour early than hear that you waited through a weekend of swelling. If you are reading this with ice on your cheek, call now. We will take it from there.
